The Calgary Stampeders will play their first game of the 2014 pre-season on Saturday when they play host to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Kickoff at McMahon Stadium will be at 7 p.m.
The contest gives Stampeders fans their first glimpse of rookie hopefuls — including 2014 first overall selection Pierre Lavertu — in game action and to welcome back last year’s stars including 2013 Most Outstanding Player and two-time CFL rushing champion Jon Cornish.
Saturday marks the first of two pre-season contests for the Stamps, who will travel to Vancouver’s BC Place to visit the Lions on Friday, June 20. This will be the second and final tune-up for the Blue Bombers, who dropped a 24-22 decision to the Toronto Argonauts on Monday in Winnipeg.
The Red and White posted a league-best 14-4 record in 2013 before losing to Saskatchewan in the Western Final. The Blue Bombers posted a league-worst 3-15 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
It’s the first pre-season meeting between the Stamps and Bombers since 2004. With the return of an Ottawa franchise to the CFL, Calgary and Winnipeg are back together in the West Division for the first time since 2005.
To celebrate the Year of the Horse, a Fortune Cookie Lottery will be held on Saturday. Fans will have the chance to win great prizes throughout the game including a destination trip valued at $7,000, courtesy of Vision 2000.
