It is with great sadness that the Calgary Stampeders have learned of the recent death of one of their alumni, Frank Budd. The Asbury Park N.J., native died of natural causes on Tuesday at the age of 74.
Budd, a receiver, played two seasons with the Stampeders (1965-66) and recorded a total of 38 catches for 891 yards and six touchdowns.
Prior to playing professional football, Budd was and Olympic sprinter and is a former 100-yard dash world record-holder. He placed fifth in the 100 meters at the 1960 Olympics in Rome and also ran on the U.S. 100-meter relay team. In 1961, Budd set world records in the 100-yard dash, the 220-yard straight sprint and was a member of a world-record 4×100 relay team.
He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1962 and also played for the Washington Redskins before coming to Calgary. Budd is survived by his wife Barbara, two daughters, a son, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
