Stamps congratulate Don Phelps

The Calgary Stampeders congratulate Don Phelps on his impending induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

Phelps is a longtime fixture in the Calgary sports community, both in his current role as the assistant manager of McMahon Stadium Society — an organization he joined in 1985 — and his 40-year career as a hockey player and coach.

“We consider Don a member of the Calgary Stampeders family and we are extremely proud to learn of his induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame,” said Stampeders president Gordon Norrie. “It is a richly deserved honour and we heartily congratulate him.”

The winningest coach in Alberta Junior Hockey League history, Phelps is being inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame as a hockey builder. The official enshrinement ceremony will be held in Red Deer on May 30.

A former player with the Drumheller Miners and Calgary Stampeders hockey team, Phelps started his coaching career in 1974 and retired in 2011. He guided his teams to five AJHL championships and led the Calgary Canucks to a Centennial Cup championship in 1995. He was previously inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame and was the Calgary Booster Club Sportsman of the Year in 1998.

In addition to his involvement with hockey and the McMahon Stadium Society, Phelps is an avid runner and has completed the Boston Marathon.
