Stamps opt to hold the Mayo

David Moll

Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that import linebacker Deron Mayo has signed a contract extension. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Mayo, 25, is entering his third season with the Stampeders. After playing primarily on special teams as a rookie in 2012, Mayo became a starter at outside linebacker during Week 4 of the 2013 season and finished second on the team with 57 tackles. He added five sacks, one interception, two fumble recoveries and two pass knockdowns. Mayo continued to excel at special teams, recording nine tackles.

“Deron has been a force both on special teams and on defence during his two years with the team,” said Hufnagel. “He did an exceptional job stepping in as a starter for us last season and I look forward to his continued improvement.”

In 35 career regular-season games for the Red and White, Mayo has 66 tackles, 24 special-teams tackles, six sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries.

“I love playing in Calgary,” said Mayo. “It’s a great city and I really enjoy playing for Coach Huff. I also have great teammates and I’m looking forward to another great season and making a run for a championship.”
