Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish has added another award to his collection as he has been named the Calgary Booster Club’s 2013 male athlete of the year. It’s the third consecutive year Cornish has won the honour.
Cornish is coming off another stellar season for the Stamps as he was named the 2013 winner of the Lou Marsh Memorial Trophy as Canada’s top athlete, becoming just the third CFL player to win that award. He was also the first Canadian to win the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award since Tony Gabriel in 1978. Russ Jackson, who earned the honour in 1963, 1966 and 1969, is the only other Canadian to be named the league’s top player.
Cornish turned in one of the greatest seasons in CFL history in 2013 as he helped lead the Stampeders to a league-best 14-4 record. He was voted both the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian and won his second consecutive rushing title as he ran for 1,813 yards, the fourth-highest total in CFL history.
Cornish also led the league and set a new franchise record with 2,157 yards from scrimmage. He led all running backs with an average of 7.0 yards per carry and was tops in the CFL this season with 14 touchdowns.
His spectacular season featured nine 100-yard games — including five in a row to tie a franchise record — and a career-best 208-yard effort on Oct. 5 against Winnipeg.
The 29-year-old running back — along with female athlete of the year Kaillie Humphries and inaugural Calgary Special Olympics athlete of the year Jennifer Riddell — will officially be honoured at the Booster Club’s Annual Sportsman of the Year Dinner on Apr. 15 at Canada Olympic Park WinSport.
Cornish is one of 13 Stampeders to be named the Calgary Booster Club’s male athlete of the year. The other winners were: Don Luzzi (1959), Harvie Wylie (1963), Lovell Coleman (1965), Wayne Harris (1967), John Helton (1973), Willie Burden (1976), James Sykes (1981), Rick Johnson (1987), Dave Sapunjis (1994), Jeff Garcia (1999), Dave Dickenson (2001) and Henry Burris (2009).
The award was started by the Calgary Press-Radio-TV Sports Club in 1958 as the Scott Mamini Award and was presented annually to the city’s top athlete chosen by local media. The format continued until 1987, at which time the award evolved into the Male Athlete of the Year.
