Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce the re-signing of non-import defensive back Jeff Hecht. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Hecht, who had been eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 15, played in 16 regular-season games in 2013, seeing action on special teams as well as a backup safety. He was fourth on the team with 10 special-teams tackles and added six defensive tackles.
“Jeff is a hard worker who was an important special-teams contributor for us last season,” said Hufnagel. “With the departure of Eric Fraser in the expansion draft, Jeff is one of the players who has an opportunity to play a more significant role on defence and I look forward to seeing him respond to that challenge.”
Hecht signed with the Stamps during 2012 training camp after spending the 2011 season with the Montreal Alouettes. In 35 career regular-season games, the Saint Mary’s alum has 38 tackles, 15 special-teams tackles and one interception.
“I’ve enjoyed playing in Calgary and I’m glad for the opportunity to continue my career with the Stampeders,” said Hecht, a 28-year-old Edmonton product. “I’m looking forward to the chance to earn a starting position and I’m going to do everything I can to help the Stamps become a championship team.”
