Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce the signing of three non-import players — offensive lineman Brad Erdos, receiver Yannick Morin-Plante and running back Charlie Power. As per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
All three players were chosen by Calgary in the CFL Canadian draft over the past two years. Morin-Plante (third round, 25th) and Power (fourth round, 28th) were drafted in 2013 while Erdos (fourth round, 27th) was a 2012 selection.
Morin-Plante and Power both spent time on the Stampeders practice roster in 2013 before returning to their university teams.
“Non-import talent and depth is instrumental to success in the CFL and I’m very excited about our crop of young Canadian players,” said Hufnagel. “I was pleased with what we saw from Yannick and Charlie when they were with us this season and we have high hopes for all three of these players. I look forward to seeing them at training camp next spring.”
Here is a closer look at each player:
Brad Erdos (OL, six-foot-three, 290 lbs.): Erdos joined Simon Fraser in 2009 when the Burnaby, B.C., school was part of the CIS and played three more seasons after the Clan made the switch to the NCAA in 2010. In 2013, he started all 10 games at left tackle for Simon Fraser and was part of a unit that allowed the second-fewest sacks in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Yannick Morin-Plante (receiver, six-feet, 200 lbs.): Morin-Plante spent six weeks on the Stampeders practice roster in 2013 before returning for his final season at Laval. He played five seasons at Laval and won Vanier Cup titles in 2010, 2012 and 2013 with the Rouge et Or. He made a total of 61 catches for 714 yards and four touchdowns including a career-high 154 yards in 2013.
Charlie Power (running back, six-foot-three, 230 lbs.): Like Morin-Plante, Power spent six weeks on the Stampeders practice roster in 2013 before returning to university. He played eight games as a receiver for the University of Saskatchewan, making 14 catches for 143 yards and one touchdown. On special teams, he recorded 10 total tackles including eight solo stops. In Saskatchewan’s playoff game against Manitoba, Power had four catches for 62 yards. He played eight games for the Huskies in 2012, making 18 catches for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to 2012, Power played linebacker for the Huskies. In 2011, he recorded 16 tackles and one fumble recovery in eight games.
