Five Calgary Stampeders players as well as head coach John Hufnagel have been named to the 2013 CFL Players’ Association all-star team.
Running back Jon Cornish, wide receiver Maurice Price, defensive end Charleston Hughes, punter Rob Maver and kicker Rene Paredes received all-star recognition. Paredes had two spots on the all-star team as he also filled the separate special teams slot.
The CFLPA all-star team was determined by a vote of players from all eight CFL teams as well as all positional coaches. Only players who played at least 12 during the season were eligible and players and coaches were not permitted to vote for any player or coach on their own team.
Voters only select players at the positions with which they go head to head — for example, wide receivers and slotbacks are voted on by defensive backs and secondary coaches. All players and coaches may vote for the head coach and special teams player.
Jon Cornish (running back): Cornish won his second consecutive rushing title as he ran for 1,813 yards, the fourth-highest total in CFL history. He also led the league and set a new franchise record with 2,157 yards from scrimmage. Cornish led all running backs with an average of 7.0 yards per carry and was tops in the CFL this season with 14 touchdowns. His spectacular season featured nine 100-yard games — including five in a row to tie a franchise record — and a career-best 208-yard effort on Oct. 5 against Winnipeg. He won nine weekly CFL awards in 2013 as well as four monthly honours.
Maurice Price (wide receiver): In his second season with the Stamps, Price played 14 games and had 57 receptions for 788 yards and seven touchdowns. Price had his best game of his career and was named the CFL’s offensive player of the week in the Labour Day Classic when he hauled in five catches for 165 yards and three touchdowns.
Charleston Hughes (defensive end): The CFL’s sack champion in 2013 with 18, Hughes was the West Division’s nominee for the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. He wound up one sack shy of Harold Hallman’s single-season franchise record. Hughes had 39 tackles, including three tackles for loss, and shared the team lead with three forced fumbles. He also had three pass knockdowns and one interception. He passed three players this season to move into third place all-time in Stampeders history with 54 career sacks. Hughes was named the CFL’s defensive player of the week on three occasions in 2013.
Rene Paredes (kicker/special teams): The third-year player from Pierrefonds, Que., established a pair of major CFL records in 2013, successfully converting on 39 straight field-goal attempts (smashing the previous record of 30) and posting an all-time best single-season success rate of 94.7 per cent. He converted 54 of his 57 field-goal tries in 2013 — including 15 of 16 from 40 or more yards — and led the league with 213 points. He is just the third player in Stampeders history to crack the 200-point milestone in a season. Paredes was named the CFL’s special-teams player of the week twice and the special-teams player of the month three times.
Rob Maver (punter): Maver led all qualified punters in 2013 with an average of 45.7 yards per boot. He was second in net punting with an average of 37.0 yards. Maver’s directional kicking was excellent as he led the CFL with 13 punts that pinned the opponents inside their own 10-yard line. Maver was twice named the CFL’s special-teams player of the week this season.
John Hufnagel (head coach): Despite dealing with a litany of injuries, Hufnagel guided the Stamps to a league-best 14-4 record. Calgary led the league in points scored and allowed the second-lowest total of points in the CFL. Injuries forced the Stamps to use three different quarterbacks in 2013 and all three pivots led the Red and White to victories. Calgary had three winning streaks of at least four games during the regular season.
