It is with great sadness that the Calgary Stampeders have learned of the death of Herm Harrison. He was 71.
One of the greatest players in franchise history, Harrison played for the Stampeders from 1964-72 and was a West Division all-star on six occasions and a CFL all-star three times.
“The entire organization mourns the death of Herm Harrison,” said Stampeders president Gordon Norrie. “He was a great player on the field for the Red and White and an even better person off it. He will be sorely missed and we extend our condolences to his family and friends.”
Harrison was a member of the Stamps’ 1971 Grey Cup championship team and scored a touchdown in a 14-11 victory over the Toronto Argonauts.
Harrison started his professional career as a linebacker but made the transition to receiver during his rookie season. Nicknamed “Ham Hands,” Harrison had three 1,000-yard seasons and finished his nine-year career with 443 receptions for 6,703 yards and 43 touchdowns. He still holds the team record of four touchdowns receptions in a game, a mark he established on Sept. 2, 1970, against Winnipeg.
A product of Arizona State University, Harrison settled in Calgary after his playing career and was an active member of the Stampeders alumni.
He was added to the Stampeders Wall of Fame in 1988 and inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
