Stamps announce award nominees

Record-breakers and league leaders highlight the list of Calgary Stampeders nominees for the 2013 Canadian Football League player awards.

CFL rushing leader Jon Cornish is the Red and White’s nominee for both the Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian while kicker Rene Paredes (Most Outstanding Special Teams Player), defensive end Charleston Hughes (Most Outstanding Defensive Player), left tackle Stanley Bryant (Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman) and centre Brett Jones (Most Outstanding Rookie) are also up for a major league award.

Calgary’s nominees were determined by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) as well as one vote from the Stampeders coaching staff.

Here is a closer look at the Stampeders’ nominees:

Jon Cornish (Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian): With one week remaining in the regular season, Cornish has rushed for 1,799 yards — the best total in the CFL since 1998. He has broken his own single-season record for most rushing yards by a Canadian and erased Andrew Harris’ mark for most yards from scrimmage by Canadian. Cornish has also broken the team record for yards from scrimmage in a season and tied the franchise mark with five consecutive 100-yard games. He’s averaging 7.1 yards per carry — tops among running backs — and holds a 201-yard lead over Saskatchewan’s Kory Sheets in his bid for a second consecutive rushing title. The 28-year-old New Westminster, B.C., product also has 42 catches for 344 yards and leads the CFL with 14 touchdowns — 12 rushing and two receiving. Cornish has received nine weekly CFL awards this season — including seven for Canadian player of the week and two for offensive player of the week — and two monthly awards.

Charleston Hughes (Most Outstanding Defensive Player): For the second season in a row, Hughes is Calgary’s nominee for the defensive player award. Hughes leads the CFL with 18 sacks — he’s three up on his closest pursuer with one week to go — and is one bagged quarterback shy of Harold Hallman’s franchise record. He’s passed three players this season to move into third place all-time in Stampeders history with 54 career sacks. Hughes this season also has 38 tackles, including three tackles for loss, three pass knockdowns, three forced fumbles and one interception. He’s been named the CFL’s defensive player of the week on three occasions in 2013.

Stanley Bryant (Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman): Bryant has made 16 starts at the all-important left tackle position, which protects the quarterback’s blind side. The four-year veteran has been an integral part of the front-line unit that has paved the way for Jon Cornish’s bid for a second straight league rushing title and allowed the team to lead the CFL in rushing yards (144.1 yards per game) and fewest sacks allowed (34).

Rene Paredes (Most Outstanding Special Teams Player): It’s been a record-breaking season for the third-year kicker as Paredes saw his streak of consecutive field goals reach 39, shattering the previous mark of 30. He’s connected on 52 of 55 field goals so far this season for a success rate of 94.5 per cent. The CFL record for best field-goal percentage in a season is 94.3. He’s been good on 14 of 15 field goals of 40 yards or longer including a 52-yarder. Paredes leads the CFL with 207 points and he’s just the third player in Stamps history to crack the 200-point mark in a season. He ranks second in the league with a 63.7-yard average on kickoffs.

Brett Jones (Most Outstanding Rookie): Just 21 at the start of the season, the University of Regina product has made a profound impact during his first professional season. Jones is the only offensive lineman to play every snap of every game this season and he’s made 16 starts at the critical centre position. Jones has been the man in the middle of an offensive line that has paved the way for Jon Cornish’s league-leading total of 1,799 rushing yards and allowed the Stampeders to lead the CFL in rushing yards (144.1 yards per game) and fewest sacks allowed (34).
