For the third week in a row and for the sixth time this season, Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish is the CFL’s Canadian player of the week.
Cornish earned the award by running for 145 yards on 19 carries — an average of 7.6 yards per rush — and adding one catch for 12 yards in the Stampeders’ 27-13 win over the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium.
During the game, Cornish surpassed 2,000 yards from scrimmage in 2013, joining Willie Burden and Allen Pitts as the only Stampeders to reach that milestone in a season.
In five career starts at the Eskimos’ home field, Cornish has rushed for a total of 657 yards and earned Canadian player-of-the-week honours on each occasion.
Cornish leads the CFL with 1,690 rushing yards and 2,022 yards from scrimmage this season and is first among running backs with an average of 7.2 yards per carry. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in four straight games and eight times overall this season.
Cornish continues to add to his single-season records for most rushing yards and most yards from scrimmage by a Canadian.
