The Stamps clinched a home playoff berth, Cornish rushed for his eighth 100+ yard game of the season and quarterback Kevin Glenn moved into 10th on the all-time CFL passing list as the Stampeders defeated the Eskimos 27-13 at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday night.
“Kevin, again, had a very solid game tonight,” says Stamps head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “He was very accurate. Made some great decisions, he made some great plays out there. The fact that he passed that milestone, I’m very pleased for him.
“He’s been a tremendous quarterback since he’s been a Stampeder and I remember when I first got back into the league in ’08, I watched a lot of ’07 film and when he played for Winnipeg I thought he had an excellent year leading that team to the Grey Cup.”
The only points scored in the first quarter came off the foot of Calgary kicker Rene Paredes who connected on a 27-yard field goal.
Eskimo kicker Grant Shaw tied it up at three apiece with a 47-yard field goal but the Stamps answered right back four plays later when Glenn found receiver Marquay McDaniel who reached across the goal line for the major.
After forcing the Eskimos to punt on their next series, Paredes kicked his second field goal of the night — a 32 yarder — to put the Stamps up 13-3.
On the next drive, Grant Shaw’s punt was blocked and scooped up by defensive back Jamar Wall who ran it into the end zone to put the Stamps up 30-3.
Before the half ended, Edmonton scored their first major of the night when quarterback Mike Reilly found slotback Adarius Bowman for a seven-yard touchdown to narrow the Stamps’ lead to 20-10 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Paredes connected on a 12-yard field goal to extend the Stamps lead to 23-10.
Shaw kicked a 33-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter to bring the Esks to within 10 points.
A 60-yard Rob Maver punt gave the Stamps a single point and Paredes added a 34-yard field goal to finish out the scoring.
The Stamps swept the season series against the Eskimos for the second season in a row with wins on Labour Day, the Labour Day rematch and tonight’s victory.
“We’re playing well but we need to get better,” continued Hufnagel. “We understand that. Again, we lost four soldiers today (Mayo, MacDougall, Sinopoli and Bryant) but guys stepped up and plugged the holes and still managed to win against a team that we knew wouldn’t quit and they were a lot better than their record, believe me. I’m pleased that we’re 13-3. We have a big game next week and hopefully we can get better and improve as a football team and get ready to play a really good football team next week.”
The Stampeders host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday, October 26 in the annual PinkPower game. Kickoff at McMahon Stadium is at 5 p.m.
