Cornish wins pair of awards

David Moll

A career night has earned Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish two CFL player-of-the-week awards.

Cornish is both the offensive player of the week as well as the top Canadian for Week 15 after racking up a career-best 208 yards on the ground in the Stamps’ 38-11 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday. He had two rushing touchdowns in the contest and added two catches for 24 yards.

Cornish is the first Stamp to rush for more than 200 yards in a game since Willie Burden in 1975 and it was the sixth best rushing performance in Stampeders history. Besides Burden’s effort in 1975, all of the other 200-yard games for the Red and White came in the 1960s.

Cornish has six 100-yard games this season and seven career games with at least 150 yards. With 1,415 yards on the season, he now has a 113-yard lead over Saskatchewan’s Kory Sheets in the CFL rushing race. Cornish is also just 43 yards away from breaking his own record for most rushing yards in a season by a Canadian.

This marks the second time this season Cornish has won both the offensive player of the week and top Canadian awards and he’s won a total of six weekly awards in 2013. He’s won the top Canadian award on 18 occasions during his career.
