Stamps win big over Bombers

Jon Cornish had a career game on Saturday as he led the Calgary Stampeders to a 38-11 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium.

Cornish rushed for a career-high 208 yards — he’s the first Stamp to rush for more than 200 yards in a game since Willie Burden in 1975 — and scored a pair of touchdowns as the Stamps improved to 11-3 with one month left in the season.

“Outstanding,” was head coach and general manager John Hufnagel’s assessment of Cornish’s performance. “Our offensive line did a nice job both in the run game and pass protection. We were able to get Jon into the second level (of the Winnipeg defence) and you saw a burst from him. He did some damage.”

It was the sixth best rushing performance in Stampeders history. Besides Burden’s effort in 1975, all of the other 200-yard games for the Red and White came in the 1960s.

Cornish has six 100-yard games this season and seven career games with at least 150 yards. He now has a 113-yard lead over Saskatchewan’s Kory Sheets in the CFL rushing race.

The fleet-footed running back was hardly the only Calgary player to have a big night, however.

Receiver Joe West, fresh off the nine-game injury list, had eight catches for 120 yards.

“Fresh legs, so to speak,” grinned Hufnagel. “We knew how excited he was getting back on the field and he made the most of his opportunities. He caught the ball and he ran very well after the catch.”

Fellow pass-catcher Marquay McDaniel hauled in five balls for 123 yards and one touchdown while Maurice Price had four receptions for 46 yards and a score.

Stamps quarterback Kevin Glenn completed 21 of 29 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns while Drew Tate came on in relief and had three completions for 41 yards.

“I thought Kevin was excellent,” said Hufnagel, “and I was glad to be able to get Drew into the game and get him some throws.”

The Stamps defence allowed only a field goal and a punt single, with the other points coming as a result of 100-yard kickoff-return touchdown by Will Ford.

“I enjoyed the fact that our defence only allowed four points,” said Hufnagel. “I’m not real thrilled that the other team had 120-some yards rushing. Like I said to the team, it was a good game in all three phases but there are some things to clean up. One is our run defence and the other thing is the blemish we had on our special teams with the kickoff return for a touchdown.”

With four games remaining in the season — including next Friday’s home date with the BC Lions — the Stamps will try to hold off BC and Saskatchewan (both at 9-5) the rest of the way. Calgary plays the Leos twice and the Roughriders once down the stretch.

“We knew that the last month of the season was going to be for the marbles,” said Hufagel. “It’s nice going into that four-game stretch with a two-game lead, but anything can happen over the next month. We play good football teams and we have to get ready to play good football week in and week out, which will help us get ready to play good playoff football.”

It was another good night for CFL scoring leader Rene Paredes as the Stamps picker was three-for-three on field goals — including a 46-yarder — and four-for-four on converts for a total of 13 points.
