Featuring clubs on complete opposites of the win-loss spectrum, the Stampeders-Blue Bombers tilt Saturday night at McMahon only seems like a mismatch.
A woeful season of adversity, unfortunate bounces and personnel issues have landed Winnipeg a record of 2-11 coming into the Week 15 matchup in Calgary, but Stamps linebacker Juwan Simpson knows the Bombers haven’t lost their fight.
“You just can’t pay attention to the media and all the other stuff,” he insists. “Everybody thinks it’s going to be an easy win but we understand the hard work they put in and they’ve just had a lot of unfortunate turnovers in their recent games.
“Their games are a lot closer than I think people perceive them to be. We understand that, but we have to go out and make sure we play all four quarters. We expect to win, but that’s every game. We know it’s not going to be an easy feat.”
Although their playoff hopes may be fading fast, the Bombers have shown they are capable of pulling off the improbable. It was only a mere four weeks ago Winnipeg exacted revenge for a Labour Day weekend loss to the then West Division-leading Saskatchewan Roughriders by beating the Green Riders in the Banjo Bowl.
Although their opponent this week sports a league worst record, Stamps big-play receiver Maurice Price insists the team will continue to prepare as if they were taking on the best team in the league.
“We’re going to treat them as if they’re anybody else,” says Price who has risen to the occasion for the Stamps this year in some of the team’s biggest games.
Price adds that the recent trickle of returning players from injury is certainly going to help in the team’s quest for a victory.
“It’s a good thing,” he says. “We’re getting healthy and we’re getting healthy at the right time. We’re getting more of our starters back and so now we’re just looking to go out and have that good chemistry and just be a cohesive unit that executes.”
Speaking of returning starters, this week marks the much anticipated return of Joe West, who went down to a shoulder injury in Week 4 against Montreal.
Prior to being hurt, West and Price were forming a lethal combination on offence, a relationship that the Red and White hopes will now return in full force.
“We got our Mo-Joe back and we’re excited about that,” chuckles West. “We are going to go out there and have fun, catch some balls and get this win.”
Being sidelined for the last nine weeks has West eager to take on the challenge awaiting him when he steps on the field Saturday.
“They got some good DBs over there,” says West. “All their guys are pretty much equal and they’ve got pretty good skills.
“They’re pretty good guys, aggressive guys, so we’re going to have to come out and attack them.”
Having won 10 straight contests against the Bombers in McMahon since 2002, the Stamps hope they can keep that trend going as they look to stay atop the West Division.
“We’re not comfortable because we’re not where we want to be,” says Simpson.
“We want to finish in first place and not just hold first place for a small time. If we can finish the season and get that first-place bye week, then we’ll have one stage accomplished that we want.”
“But ultimately, we want to win that Cup.”
Kickoff is Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
