Arthur named top Canadian

David Moll

Calgary Stampeders receiver Jabari Arthur has been named the Canadian Football League’s Canadian player of the week.

The 31-year-old Montreal native had a big night as he played an important role in the Stamps’ 35-11 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday at Alumni Stadium in Guelph, Ont.

Arthur scored on a 52-yard catch-and-run early in the second quarter to give the Stamps their first points of the evening. In the fourth quarter, he made a catch, absorbed a hit and scooted into the end-zone for his second major of the night, this time a 35-yarder.

The sixth-year slotback out of the University of Akron finished the night with four catches for a career-high total of 103 yards. Asked to take on a larger role in the absence of injured all-star Nik Lewis, Arthur has established new career single-season bests with 34 receptions, 445 yards and three touchdowns.

It’s the second time in Arthur’s career he has been named the Canadian player of the week as he previously won the honour in Week 7 of the 2011 season.
