Heroes of the Stamps

In the spirit of Heroes’ Night, a few Stamps players were asked who their personal heroes are.

Defensive back Fred Bennett had a highlight-reel, game-saving punch-out in Week 4 against the Montreal Alouettes, during one of the biggest comebacks in CFL history.

“I would have to say my parents are my heroes,” said Bennett, “because growing up in the conditions I grew up in and seeing them make do with what they had to give me and my sibling what we wanted, that makes them my heroes. I think about my parents every game, every week.

“Being a dad, I strive every day to be like my parents were with me. Growing up, I didn’t have much but now I’m in a position to give my son some of the things I didn’t have.”

All-star punter Rob Maver has consistently given the Stamps defence excellent field position while pinning the opposition deep in its own end. He was named special teams player of the week for Week 12.

“My grandmother had a large part in raising me and she helped turn me into the person I am today,” said Maver.

Keon Raymond is a defensive stalwart for the Stamps who has been giving QBs and receivers fits all season.

“I’d have to say my wife’s grandfather,” said Raymond. “He was a family man, a hardworking man. He was dedicated to his church and he worked hard. He was married for 60-70 years. He showed me that you can do certain things and keep it all together. He passed away the year we won the Grey Cup — I was heartbroken by that. I know he watches over me and I appreciate the little time I did have with him.”

Marquay McDaniel scored the go-ahead touchdown in Week 12 against a tough Hamilton team. With the Stamps down late in the fourth quarter, McDaniel bore down and went to work.

“I would have to say my mom,” said McDaniel. “Ever since I was a little kid, she taught me my work ethic. I’ve always been a hard worker and she used to always tell me and my brother that you have to work hard for what you want.”

The Stampeders will honour Canadian Military and Calgary police and firefighters on Heroes’ Night this Saturday when the Red and White go up against the East Division-leading Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is at 5:30 pm.
