CFL honours punter Rob Maver

David Moll

An exceptional performance in the Stampeders’ 26-22 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week has earned punter Rob Maver the Canadian Football League’s special teams player of the week award.

The special-teams honour typically goes to a place-kicker or a returner but Maver grabbed the attention of voters with a great night of punting, not to mention a successful pass on a fake punt that resulted in a key 31-yard pass completion to Matt Walter.

Maver averaged 48.8 yards on five punts, including a perfectly executed coffin-corner kick in the first quarter that travelled 49 yards and resulted in Hamilton starting a drive at its own one-yard line.

In the fourth quarter, with the Stamps facing a third down on their 17-yard line, Maver gave Calgary some breathing room with a 52-yard punt. It was Maver’s second 52-yarder on the night.

Maver’s fake-punt play came with the Stamps facing a third-and-eight from their own 26-yard line. The completion to Walter kept the drive alive and led to a Rene Paredes field goal that started Calgary’s comeback from a nine-point deficit.

Through 11 games this season, Maver leads the CFL in gross punting average (45.3 yards) and ranks second in net punting average (37.5) and punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line (20).

Stamps players have received weekly awards a total of 11 times this season. Running back Jon Cornish has won three top Canadian awards and also earned offensive player-of-the-week nod in Week 7. Charleston Hughes (top defensive player) and Rene Paredes (special teams) have both been recognized on two occasions while Bo Levi Mitchell (Week 5) and Maurice Price (Week 10) have been named offensive player of the week.

Also, Cornish (Canadian) and Paredes (special teams) were the CFL’s players of the month for June/July.
