Plenty of football on tap this weekend

There’s a huge weekend of football action in store for Calgary fans.

The three-day football-fest at McMahon Stadium kicks off on Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Stampeders face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Canadian Football League action.

As a nod to the University of Calgary and the tradition of college spirit, Friday’s CFL contest kicks off “Homecoming Weekend” in the city.

Speaking of the U of C, the Dinos play their home-opener at McMahon on Saturday at 5 p.m. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies will provide the opposition as the Dinos, who have started the 2013 season with two road wins, bid for an unprecedented sixth consecutive Canada West championship. Admission to the game is free for U of C students.

There is a great joint tradition between the Stamps and Dinos. In addition to sharing a home field, dozens of Dinos players have gone on to suit up for the Stamps including current team members Anthony Parker, Matt Walter and Dan Federkeil.

The big weekend of pigskin passion wraps up Sunday as the junior Calgary Colts take on the Edmonton Wildcats in Prairie Football Conference action. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Again, there are strong links between the two Calgary teams as current Stamps Johnny Forzani and Spencer Wilson are among the Colts who later played for the Red and White.

Stampeders season-ticket holders are reminded that their ticket booklets include season passes to both the Dinos and Colts home contests and are encouraged to come out and support all of Calgary’s football clubs.

“Fans are in for a treat as this promises to be a great weekend of football at McMahon,” said Stampeders president Gordon Norrie. “The wonderful relationship the Stampeders enjoy with both the Dinos and the Colts is very important to us and we wish Blake Nill and John Stevens and their teams all the best.”
