The Calgary Stampeders continued their winning ways, sweeping the annual Labour Day home-and-home series for the fourth time in the last five years and securing their seventh consecutive victory in the Labour Day rematch.
Bo Levi Mitchell got his second start of the season and went 19 of 26 for 175 yards and a touchdown.
“(Mitchell) is a young quarterback that every time he gets game experience he’ll be able to put that in his resume and learn from it,” says head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “Whether Kevin Glenn or Drew Tate was playing tonight, Greg Marshall did a good job of mixing things up. They were getting into the offensive backfield, putting some pressure on, not making it easy and we had to nickel and dime more than we would’ve liked to but we were able to do it enough to get into scoring position.”
Jon Cornish was the star for an offence that at times looked out of sync, racking up 131 yards rushing, 177 all-purpose yards and a touchdown on the night.
The first quarter saw the Stampeders draw first blood thanks to an 11-yard touchdown run by Cornish.
The scoring drive was kicked off when Ben D’Aguilar recovered a punt return fumble by Cary Koch at the Eskimos 21-yard line.
The Eskimos have now gone eight straight games without a touchdown in the first quarter. To add to the Eskimos woes, Koch was lost late in the first quarter and did not return.
In the second quarter, after a missed 36-yard field goal attempt — resulting in a single — Edmonton’s Chris Thompson would pick off a Bo Levi Mitchell pass to set up Edmonton’s first scoring drive capped off by a one-yard John White touchdown run, knotting the score at seven a piece.
Calgary would respond on the next drive with a Cornish 29-yard run that would set up a 42-yard Rene Paredes field goal, putting the Stamps up 10-8.
After a second consecutive single off an O’Neill missed field goal, both teams had their drives stall, going into the half with the Red and White leading the Green and Gold 10-9.
By halftime, the Stamps defence had continued their quarterback hunting ways, sacking Reilly five times for a combined loss of 43 yards.
The Stampeders would begin the second half with a Paredes 34-yard field goal, putting the Stamps up 13-9.
At the end of the third quarter, an objectionable conduct penalty was charged to Edmonton, putting Calgary in field goal range for Paredes who successfully put the Stamps up 16-9 going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter would see the two rivals trade field goals back and forth with the Stamps getting the better of their Green and Gold rivals 22-12.
Rene Paredes continued his automatic ways going five-for-five on the night and adding a convert for 16 points while Cordarro Law and Charleston Hughes led the defence, sacking Reilly twice each. Eskimo quarterback Mike Reilly was sacked a total of seven times on the night.
This was Coach Hufnagel’s 100th regular game as the Stamps’ bench boss.
“They gave me one of the game balls so that was very nice and very special to me so I’m very appreciative,” says Hufnagel.
The Stampeders next match is in the friendly confines of McMahon Stadium against Henry Burris and the 4-5 Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
