Cornish loves Commonwealth

As a British Columbia native, Jon Cornish has often referred to Vancouver’s BC Place as his football home away from McMahon Stadium.

Perhaps he should consider adding Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium to that list.

In four career starts at the Eskimos’ home field, the Calgary running back has accumulated an impressive 512 yards. In his first three starts at Commonwealth, he earned the CFL’s Canadian player of the week honours.

And you have to think Cornish will be a contender for a fourth weekly league award after rushing for 131 yards and making six catches for 46 yards and a touchdown in Friday’s 22-12 win at Commonwealth.

The latest starring performance at Commonwealth comes two weeks after he sat out a game with an injury and four days after he was held to 60 yards in the Labour Day Classic at McMahon Stadium.

“I came into this game, I started feeling good,” said Cornish after Friday’s contest. “I’ve been injured for a while now and it was just nice to return to form.”

Cornish has had some memorable days at Commonwealth.

In the 2011 West Division semifinal, his first career start in Edmonton, Cornish ran for 127 yards and a touchdown.

In last year’s Labour Day rematch, he shredded the Eskimos for a career-high 185 yards. Then, on Nov. 2, 2012, he broke Normie Kwong’s single-season record for most rushing yards by a Canadian with an appropriately spectacular 22-yard run.

Now comes his latest gem — he led the Stamps both in rushing and receiving and averaged an astounding 9.4 yards per carry.

Impressive, but Cornish knows there’s plenty of credit to go around.

“Our defence came and they stopped whatever Edmonton was trying to do,” he pointed out. “They held strong. I think that was a real key to our victory as a team tonight.

“On offence Bo Levi (Mitchell) was getting the ball to people he that he needed to get it to, the offensive line was stopping people.  I think overall, it was a good team win.”

Cornish is now just 60 yards away from a second consecutive 1,000-yard season and his 6.8-yard average per carry is tops among CFL running backs.
