Good things come in threes

It’s called the Labour Day Classic for a reason, because the games are generally that; Classics.

The 2013 installment did not disappoint with a breathtaking finish, big play-a-plenty, and new milestones reached for three hard working Stampeders.

Maurice Price has had to fight through a couple of injuries in the early part of the season and was champing at the bit to get back on the field.

“It’s kind of frustrating,” says the big play receiver, “to play one game, two games and then be out a couple games. So hopefully, the injuries are behind me and I can keep going.”

If the injuries are behind him, CFL defences may be nervous.

Price had a career night hauling in five catches for 165 yards and three touchdowns in a Labour Day game that took time to develop but finished with a bang.

“I’ve been hungry for one of these breakout games,” grins the man called Mo. “I finally got one. It feels good and now I just want to build on it.”

Joining Price with a milestone game was Stamps defensive gem Fred Bennett.

Already the mastermind of a highlight reel, touchdown-saving punch-out earlier in the season, Bennett — who made a quick flight south of the border to see his first son born last week — had a solid defensive performance, registering two interceptions and three tackles.

“I just had it in the back of my mind my little boy at home,” gushes the proud papa. “This was his first game watching me, even though he probably doesn’t know what’s going on.

“I know that at some point he’s going to grow up and I’m going to tell him about this game, so I just wanted to make it special.”

And special it was. It’s not every day that an opponent storms back — being down by 30 points with a shade under seven minutes remaining — to score 27 points and nearly steal the win in front of a raucous home crowd.

Bennett and his teammates were able to weather the storm by three points — a field goal — to come away Labour Day Classic victors.

That field goal difference came from arguably the league’s best kicker this year in Rene Paredes who reached a career milestone — 100 CFL field goals — and ultimately ending with 101 for the evening.

“I just found out I did that about five minutes ago,” says the man with the automatic-like leg. “Now, I just have to keep it going.”

Paredes and his teammates hope to keep this winning feeling going as they have punched their way to a 7-2 record, good for sole possession of second in both the West division and overall in the CFL.

While Calgary has managed to maintain a perfect home record this season, their next challenge takes them on the road to the unfriendly confines of Commonwealth Stadium for the rematch; a mere four days after the Labour Day Classic.

If Monday’s installment was any indication, there could be more milestones ahead. As to who walks away happy has yet to be determined.
