When it comes to the Labour Day Classic, there are a few individual performances that stand out.
In 1962, for instance, Earl (Earthquake) Lunsford compiled an amazing five rushing touchdowns in a 49-17 trouncing of the Edmonton Eskimos, Calgary’s traditional rival in the annual contest.
On the passing side of things, the first name that comes to mind for many is Jeff Garcia.
In the 1995 Labour Day Classic, Garcia threw for an incredible 546 yards and a team-record six touchdowns as the Stamps dumped the Eskimos 51-26. What’s even more remarkable is that the team was Garcia’s first home-field start with the Stamps and just his second overall as he had taken over the reins from the injured Doug Flutie.
“For the entire team, it was just one of those days where everything we touched turned to gold,” remembered Garcia. “It was a very special day because my father and brother were in the stands and I know how much that rivalry with the Eskimos means to the people of Calgary.”
