Another Classic is on the way

One of the great traditions in Canadian football will be renewed on Monday as the Stampeders host the Edmonton Eskimos in the Labour Day Classic, presented by Jayman.

This is the 58th time the Stamps will be playing at home on Labour Day and Calgary holds an all-time record of 31-25-1 on the first Monday in September. Early in their history, the Stamps played a variety of opponents on Labour Day but since 1982 the day has been reserved for an inter-provincial battle with the Edmonton Eskimos.

The first 4,000 fans through the gates will receive a red cowbell. CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon will be taking a tour of the Stampeders fans’ tailgating activity prior to this classic contest.

The Eskimos lead the Labour Day series 25-21-1 but the Stamps have won three of the four most recent meetings and four of the last six.

Calgary enters this year’s matchup with a 6-2 record, with the Stamps’ most recent result being a 35-14 road victory over the Toronto Argonauts.

The Eskimos (1-7) are in the midst of a six-game losing streak, with their four latest setbacks coming by a combined total of just 12 points.

Eskimos starting quarterback Mike Reilly is second in the CFL with 2,031 passing yards and has eclipsed the 300-yard mark in three straight games  including a 511-yard performance on Sept. 18 against Toronto.

The Stamps have scored 261 points so far this season — just three off the league lead — and have scored at least 30 points in four of their five most recent outings.

Calgary is 3-0 at McMahon so far in 2013 while the Eskimos are 1-3 on the road.

As is the tradition, the Stamps will head up north four days after the Labour Day Classic to face the Eskimos in a rematch at Commonwealth Stadium.
