Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish has earned a pair of Canadian Football League awards for his outstanding play during the Red and White’s 42-27 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday at McMahon Stadium.
Cornish is the league’s offensive player of the week and top Canadian thanks to his 175-yard, four-touchdown rushing output. Cornish became the first Stampeder since Earl Lunsford in 1962 to score four rushing touchdowns in a single game and the 175-yard total was the third best in Cornish’s career.
Cornish averaged 10.9 yards per carry in last week’s game and had a long run of 53 yards as well as scoring plays of 14, two, 32 and one yards. He also had three catches for 20 yards against Saskatchewan as the Stampeders handed the Roughriders their first loss of the season and pulled into a first-place tie in the West Division.
The seven-year veteran leads the CFL with seven rushing touchdowns in 2013 and leads all running backs with an average of 7.3 yards per carry. Cornish is second in the league in rushing yards with 676 — an average of 113 yards per game — and yards from scrimmage with 833.
This is the third time in Cornish’s career he has been named offensive player of the week and the 16th time he has been named Canadian of the week. Since Week 12 of the 2010 season, Cornish is the only Canadian to be named the league’s offensive player of the week.
This marks the eighth time a Stamps player has been honoured by the CFL this season. Bo Levi Mitchell was the offensive player of the week in Week 5 while kicker Rene Paredes was named the league’s special teams player of the week for both Week 3 and Week 4. Cornish (top Canadian) and Charleston Hughes (top defensive player) were honoured for their play in a Week 1 victory over the BC Lions.
In addition, Cornish (Canadian) and Paredes (special teams) were the CFL’s players of the month for June/July.
