Drew Tate is trying to look on the bright side of his latest medical setback.
Thought to be fit and ready for action coming out of the bye week, the veteran quarterback felt discomfort in his arm after Monday’s practice and his status is in doubt for Friday’s game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
“Everything happens for a reason,” said Tate, “and something good will come out of this. It might not be now, it might be next year.
“A perfect example is last year when I hurt my shoulder and (Brad) Sinopoli comes back in to be the quarterback and then we were able to talk him into staying as a receiver once I came back. That was a good thing for him, right? And like I said, something good will come of this. Just time will tell.”
In the meantime, all Tate can do is consult with the doctors and hope for a turnaround in his recent fortunes.
“I mean it’s really disappointing because I had a whole month off and hoped to come back,” he said. “I did some treatment down in Texas during the bye week and came back and I felt pretty good after the Day-A practice (on Sunday) but then after (Tuesday’s) practice it just went south on me.”
If Tate can’t go Friday, veteran Kevin Glenn — who led the Stamps to 10 regular-season wins and a West Division final upset of the BC Lions in 2012 — will get the call.
“Well,” said head coach and general manager John Hufnagel, “it’s a good problem to have, truthfully, that I do have three quarterbacks (Tate, Glenn and Bo Levi Mitchell) that have demonstrated they can win football games.”
As for Tate, he’s determined to stay positive and patient.
“I’ve got no control over it, you know?” he said. “I can only do what I can do, and there’s nothing I can do right now. There’s no point in letting my emotions and feelings get angry because that’s not going to help. Nothing’s going to help except just getting treatment, staying positive, letting my teammates see me and how I take this.
“It’s not the end of the world. There are 12 more games after this game left in the regular season, so it’s a long season. We still got two months, three months left in the regular season. There’s a lot of time — it’s just adversity and we’ll overcome it.”
