Cornish and Paredes honoured

Two members of the Calgary Stampeders have earned Canadian Football League player-of-the-month honours for June/July.

Running back Jon Cornish is the CFL’s top Canadian for the month while kicker Rene Paredes is the top special teams player for the period.

Cornish led all non-imports and was second overall with 501 rushing yards and 638 yards from scrimmage in five June/July games. He is also second in the CFL with four touchdowns including three rushing and one receiving.

The CFL’s reigning Most Outstanding Canadian had 100-yard rushing games in Week 1 — 172 yards to go with two touchdowns in a win over BC — and Week 4 — 109 yards in a dramatic comeback victory over Montreal.

It’s the fourth consecutive month Cornish has been named the CFL’s top Canadian as he also picked up the award in August, September and October/November in 2012.

Meanwhile, Paredes picks up his second consecutive CFL monthly award after a record-breaking start to the 2013 campaign.

Named special teams player of the month for October/November of 2012 after finishing the regular season with 18 straight successful field goals, Paredes picked up where he left off by going 16-for-16 to start 2013. In the process, Paredes established a record with 34 straight field goals, shattering Paul McCallum’s old mark of 30. Counting eight field goals in the 2012 playoffs, Paredes has been successful on 42 straight field-goal attempts.

Paredes leads all CFL players with 62 points so far this season and is also first in field goals (16) and field-goal percentage (100) and second in average kickoff distance (63.9 yards).
