Paredes makes it two in a row

For a second consecutive week, Calgary Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes has been honoured by the Canadian Football League as the special teams player of the week.

Paredes was four-for-four in field-goal tries — including a season-long 41-yarder — during the Stampeders’ 38-27 win over the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium on Saturday and added a pair of converts for a total of 14 points. Including playoffs, Paredes has now been successful on 37 straight field-goal attempts — an unprecedented feat in league history — and his regular-season streak stands at 29, one shy of Paul McCallum’s CFL record.

The third-year kicker from Concordia was also the CFL’s special teams player of the week in Week 3 as he had 16 points in the first of the Red and White’s back-to-back wins over Montreal and he has received weekly honours a total of three times during his career.

Through the first four weeks of the 2013 season, Paredes leads the CFL in field goals (11), field-goal accuracy (100 per cent) and points (44). He’s second in the league with an average of 65.4 yards on kickoffs.

This marks the fourth time a Stamps player has been honoured by the CFL this season. In addition to Paredes’ two awards, Jon Cornish (top Canadian) and Charleston Hughes (top defensive player) were honoured for their play in a Week 1 victory over the BC Lions.
