The streak lives for Rene Paredes.
The Calgary kicker lined up in the fourth quarter Saturday for what would have been his 30th consecutive field goal, tying the record held by BC Lions kicker Paul McCallum.
Somehow, the Calgary protection broke down and John Bowman roared up the middle to block the kick.
Under CFL rules, the block counts as a fumble, not a missed field goal, because the point of contact came behind the line of scrimmage.
“I knew it didn’t count as a miss,” Paredes said. “But I had to make it official and just wait. Now that we know, I’m a little more calm.”
After a slight pause, the crowd roared in approval for the 29 straight by the Stampeder kicker — a gesture Paredes appreciates and wishes he had acknowledged.
“I was screaming at the o-line,” Paredes said. “I should have waved to the crowd. I apologize for that.”
The 28-year-old kicker will attempt to make history on Friday in Winnipeg.
Regardless, Parades kicked 37 straight field goals before the block (including regular season AND playoffs) — a feat never before accomplished in the CFL.
