Despite the fact they walked out of Montreal with a win last week, Jabari Arthur knows the task will be much harder this Saturday when he and the Stampeders square off against those same Alouettes in the second game of a home-and-home set.
Although the Als have stumbled out of the gate in this young CFL season, their history of elite play should be a warning to not take them lightly.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenge,” says Arthur, a sixth-year wide-out and Montreal native. “Montreal is a very good team. You can’t sleep on them at all.”
When you face a sure-fire future hall-of-fame pivot in Anthony Calvillo, at any moment a mistake could cost your team dearly.
“There aren’t going to be too many surprises, so we are going to have to pay more attention to executing the details and what not,” says Arthur.
The Stamps sport a 34-32-1 all-time regular-season record against the Alouettes going into Saturday’s tilt – 20-12-1 in the games played at McMahon stadium.
And while the hometown-heroes own the edge as of late in the head-to-head series against Montreal, having won six of the last 10 games overall, they have also dominated at home since 2008 going 4-1.
To further thicken the plot, the Stamps are 8-1 in the second game of back to back series, showing a penchant for toughness in the rematch.
Regardless of the historical record, head coach and general manager John Hufnagel will be sure to prepare his squad for an Als team looking to exact some revenge to prove they are still an elite squad.
For Arthur, playing his hometown team doesn’t change his approach to his pre-game preparation.
“I’m just going out there to try to help the team win despite where I’m playing and who I’m playing.”
Be that as it may, playing at home last week in front of the home crowd loaded with family and friends had to hold extra meaning, right?
“Obviously it was nice to be playing at home,” he says “but it didn’t mean anything extra for me.”
During last week’s game at Percival Stadium Arthur finished with three catches for 38 yards in front of loved ones who have supported him since he was young.
“I needed 18 tickets for the game, so I had a good group of support.
“I’ve been playing there since I was 13 years old. It’s always good to go back home and play in front of family and friends.”
During the game Arthur reached a personal milestone, his 50th reception. It’s a nice accomplishment for a player who has had to persevere through injuries and waiting behind seasoned players.
This season Arthur has been able to avoid the injury bug and contribute to the team’s on-field success.
“Things so far are good. I can’t complain.
“I got to play in a home-opener for the first time in a very long time. I’m blessed and hopefully the health continues on for the rest of the season and the team has great success.”
