Officially, Rene Paredes is still chasing Paul McCallum’s Canadian Football League record of 30 consecutive successful field-goal attempts.
The Stampeders kicker, known as “El Matador” to his teammates, is credited with 25 straight successful kicks — 18 in a row to end the 2012 regular and seven to start 2013.
But if you factor in his playoff work in 2012 — two-for-two in the West semifinal, two-for-two in the West final, four-for-four in the Grey Cup — Paredes has actually punched 33 in a row through the uprights in games that count. And no one in the long history of the CFL has ever done that.
Paredes hasn’t missed a field goal since Sept. 23, 2012, and he’s connected on 47 of 50 field goal tries — an astounding 94 per cent success rate — since the start of the 2012 campaign.
