West: A wake-up call in Regina

CP Images/Derek Mortenson

This is a hard game to swallow tonight. It started off good. We took the momentum early in the game and then it just went away.

That happens sometimes.

The offence wasn’t on the field that much and we just couldn’t find a groove.

The Roughriders didn’t do anything different in the second half. They stuck to the same game plan. The only thing that changed was we as an offence weren’t on the field enough in the second half.

I’m feeling confident in our offence. Every day we practice hard. Drew (Tate) and I do extra things such as catching balls after practice. It was kind of obvious tonight because we had such a good groove in that first half, and I couldn’t see anything changing; we were connected.

Yes there is a lot of room to get better as an offence collectively, we just have to continue to work hard and focus on the details and we’ll be able to knock out a lot of bad plays.

Some might think the crowd played into the decision tonight. It is a hostile environment in Regina. They bleed green. We knew that coming in and our game plan was to stick together. We are all we have and we did that. The fans didn’t have anything to do with how the game went, that was another issue.

We had one another; we just didn’t take advantage of our opportunities.

But don’t worry Stamps fans. It’s fairly early in the season; it’s only the second game. There is so much potential to be great. We just need to pay more attention to details and we’ll be really good.

Games like this can have a positive effect. It’s actually a wake-up call; a real eye-opener. It definitely opened a lot of eyes of some of the guys in the locker room.

We do not accept this and we’ve got to go to work this weekend. We’ve got to be better. I know I am looking forward to getting better and making the most of my plays next week against a good Montreal team.

I want to take a moment tonight to mention the late Billy Powers. I had the opportunity to get to know him. He was a big guy. Comedy, comedy, comedy, just a fun, high-energy guy. I give all my blessings to his family, may God be with them.

It’s such a hard time and I know they’re dealing with a lot of heartache. I want them to know the Calgary Stampeders are fully, 100 per cent behind them and whatever they need, we are here. They can lean on us.

Stamps pride!
