Hefney happy to play any position

Stampeders defensive utility player Jonathan Hefney hasn’t been in Calgary long, but he sure is turning heads with his impressive on-field play.

In last week’s impressive 44-32 victory over BC, Hefney finished with 10 tackles and was a vital cog in Rick Campbell’s defence. Hefney filled in admirably for CFL defensive all-star Keon Raymond, who missed the contest with an ankle injury.

With Raymond healthy again, Hefney says he isn’t concerned about what lies ahead.

“I’m a professional — I know how it goes. (Raymond) was hurt Week 1, I just came in and filled in for him,” said the five-year CFL veteran.  “Hopefully, I did good enough so that I can be on the field somewhere else. “

The former Tennessee Volunteer says it doesn’t matter where he’s playing — as long as he’s playing football, he’s having fun.

“I just love to be on the field,” he said. “I’ll have fun playing where ever they put me. No matter what, I’m going to give it 100 per cent.”

Hefney most certainly was having fun last week as the defence limited Travis Lulay and his very skilled offence to only 72 yards on the ground and 283 receiving yards. The Stampeders defence also got to the BC quarterback multiple times, sacking Lulay three times.

Meanwhile, a tired Lions defence accounted for zero sacks and gave up 437 total yards to a Drew Tate offence that never seemed to get off the field.

“We just had a mentality of what we wanted to do, we came out, played our game, ran coverages that we wanted to run and the offence kept us off the field a lot,” said Hefney.  “You get enough rest like that and once you get back on the field, you can do whatever you want.”

Heading into this week’s match-up with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Hefney’s role remains uncertain.

“Today’s day one,” he shrugged. “I’m just going out practising, going hard. We’re going to see what happens this week.”

One thing is for sure, Hefney expects great things from this year’s Stamps defence.

“Knowing how good they we were last year, knowing what I can do, we’re only going to get better,” he said. “I just want to make sure I raise my game up every game.”
