Stamps win final pre-season game

With another wild-west shoot out between the Stampeders and Roughriders in the books, Calgary caps off the end of their pre-season with a record of 1-1 after a fourth quarter comeback in Regina.

“I thought both teams competed very well, played with a lot of energy and both teams made plays,” says head coach John Hufnagel. “We managed to kick the winning field goal late in the game and kept them off the scoreboard after that.”

The Stamps would begin the fourth quarter down 23-14 but quickly cut into the Riders lead with LaMarcus Coker running in for the one-yard touchdown. With the score the Stampeders found themselves down by two with Saskatchewan leading 23-21.

After Saskatchewan missed a 48-yard field goal, their next possession would see a fumbled snap cost them another score.

With 2:20 left in the fourth quarter, Paredes would finish the game off with his third field goal of the night, this time a 29-yard boot, giving the Stampeders a lead of 24-23 for the victory.

The contest began with Coker fumbling the opening kick off after an impressive return. Saskatchewan would make good on the turn over and score on their first drive of the game. Korey Sheets capped off the five-play drive with a one-yard run for the touchdown.

The Stamps would get on the board with their second possession of the game when Rene Parades connected on a 37–yard field goal at 9:14 of the first quarter to bring the red and white within four.

With 4:50 remaining in the first quarter defensive lineman Demonte’ Bolden intercepted a Darian Durant pass. Tate would take this opportunity to march his offence down the field, finishing the drive off at the 12:50 mark with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Rob Cote. Paredes added the convert to put the Stamps up 10-7 going into the second quarter.

A Rob Maver punt opened the scoring in the second quarter for Calgary, adding a single point, putting Calgary up 11-7.  The Stampeders defence would steal the show in the second quarter, adding five sacks, three from Shawn Lemon. Paredes would add the only other offensive score of the quarter for the Stamps, a 35-yard field goal putting them up 14-7 going into half time.

The third quarter started with Calgary conceiving a safety cutting their lead to 14-9.  On their next possession, Saskatchewan would take the lead. Sheets would rush for 12 yards for his second score of the game, setting the Riders up for the convert, putting them up 16-14.

Saskatchewan would add to their lead with 4:32 remaining in the third quarter. Durant and Scott McHenry would hook up for a touchdown score putting the Riders up 23-14.

On Calgary’s next possession, veteran quarterback, Kevin Glenn entered the game.  Glenn made things happen quickly, leading the offence down the field, finishing the quarter off with a second and goal situation for the red and white.

“Our defence played extremely well in the first half,” says Hufnagel. “What I didn’t like was we took some penalties that our defence committed in the third quarter on two drives. We had them off the field on second down and there were two penalties that kept the drive alive for Saskatchewan and they took advantage of it and put two touchdowns on the board. But I saw some very good individual play out there and there will be some tough decisions to make.”

The Stampeders open the regular season at home on June 28 when they take on the BC Lions.
