Stamps travel to Regina for tune-up

>> LISTEN LIVE: News Talk 770

The Stampeders wrap up their pre-season schedule on Thursday with a visit to Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field and a meeting with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Kickoff is at 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on News Talk 770.

Calgary suffered a 29-27 loss to the BC Lions in last week’s pre-season opener while the Roughriders picked up a 31-24 decision over the Eskimos at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.

While John Hufnagel was free with his substitutions last week, the Stampeders head coach and general manager is expected to stick longer with his regular in the second and final pre-season test.

“We’re going to play the perceived starters for probably the first half, at least,” said Hufnagel. “And maybe even into the third quarter. I would like to see most of the perceived starters get at least a good 30 minutes under their belts and then get an evaluation on the other guys.”

The Stamps and other CFL teams will have to set their season-opening roster this weekend as the season kicks with a four-game slate next week including the Stampeders’ home-opener against the BC Lions on Friday, June 28.

The Stamps and Riders met three times during the 2012 regular season, with Calgary winning twice. The rivals met again in the West Division semifinal at McMahon Stadium, with the Stamps pulling out a dramatic 36-30 victory.

Calgary is 8-3 in pre-season action since Hufnagel took over the reins in 2008.
