The Stampeders have finalized their training-camp roster by signing non-import offensive lineman Brett Jones, import receiver Brandon Kinnie, import defensive lineman Swanson Miller and import defensive back Jalil Johnson. As per club policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Jones was selected by Calgary in the second round (16th overall) of the 2013 CFL Canadian Draft. He played four seasons for the University of Regina Rams and in 2012 was a finalist for the J.P. Metras Trophy, which goes to the top lineman in CIS. He was named a first-team Canada West and CIS all-star and was Regina’s male athlete of the year. Jones was also a Canada West and CIS first-team all-star in 2011. He twice was named Canada West’s top student-athlete and is a three-time member of the Canadian all-academic team.
Kinnie attended training camp with the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs in 2012. In college, he played three seasons at Nebraska where he finished with 81 career receptions, just one catch away from breaking into the Top 10 in school history. Prior to transferring to Nebraska, Kinnie played one season at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas and hauled in 62 passes for 845 yards and 10 touchdowns on his way to earning first-team All-Jayhawk Conference honours.
Miller has spent NFL time with the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens. He played two seasons for Oklahoma State, appearing in all 13 games both 2008 and 2009. In his senior year, he recorded 24 tackles, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble and was part of a Cowboys defence that held opponents to 3.0 yards per rush.
Johnson attended training camp with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2012. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011 and attended their training camp. Johnson was a walk-on at Jackson State and, in 21 career games, recorded 59 tackles, 18 pass break-ups, four tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions.
All four players will be on the field tomorrow at McMahon Stadium as rookie camp gets under way. Main camp starts Sunday.
In other transaction news, the Stamps have released import defensive lineman Moe Fountain.
