With the 13th overall pick in the 2013 CFL Draft, the Calgary Stampeders not only selected a talented linebacker, but possibly one of the most dynamic personalities available in Ben D’Aguilar out of McMaster University.
The defensive standout from the Marauders is noted for his sharp wit and sense of humour that has led some to label him as eccentric or quirky.
“I love being different, I don’t want to be regular,” said D’Aguilar during the CFL combine. “A lot of guys might switch their answers based on who they’re talking to, but I’m always me.”
However quirky D’Aguilar may be, there is no denying the impact he makes on the field. The six-foot-two, 240-lb. defensive lineman brings a high-end mix of speed and strength along with an impressive CIS resume.
Along with a 2011 Vanier Cup ring, D’Aguilar started every game for McMaster in 2012 setting a Canadian university record for sacks with 12.5. He also added 28 tackles, 27 of which were solo, and forced one fumble as the Marauders made their second straight appearance in the Vanier Cup. He would go on to win the 2012 J.P. Metras trophy as the CIS top lineman, causing scouts to take notice as his ranking rose from No. 10 to No. 5 before settling in to No. 7 by draft day.
D’Aguilar is best noted for his speed coming off the edge which has caused problems for slower offensive tackles, a skill he showed off with confidence at the CFL Combine.
In speaking about what he feels he can bring to the Stampeders D’Aguilar points out his “athleticism and versatility” along with an ability to contribute on special teams.
“He’ll be able to come in and hopefully be a starter on all four special teams and you know how much we value our special teams play,” says head coach and GM John Hufnagel. “And then he’ll work to get into a defensive rotation. He’s a big-body guy with excellent speed and he’ll be able to win individual matchups on special teams.”
