Don’t look now but it’s 100 days until the 2013 regular-season opener at McMahon Stadium.
Yep, that’s right. In exactly 100 days the Stampeders will kick off the new campaign on June 28 by hosting the BC Lions in a rematch of last year’s West Division final.
Yeah, we can hardly wait either.
Here are the some of the events that will help burn away the days as we wait for the big moment.
• Even in the off-season, the Stamps remain active in the community. The Stampeders basketball team, brought to you by New York Fries, has three more stops on its 2013 schedule including a road trip to Chestermere on Mar. 28 to wrap up the slate of games.
The Stamps will also take part in events to benefit Easter Seals Alberta, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Calgary Food Bank and Special Olympics, among other great causes.
• It’s A Snap, the annual ladies-only football seminar which is sponsored by Delta Lodge at Kananaskis, will be held over two nights — Wednesday, Apr. 24 and Thursday, Apr. 25. This is the first year the program has been offered at two levels — 101 for beginners and 201 for slightly more advanced students.
The Apr. 25 201 session is sold out and there are limited spaces available for the 101 seminar on Apr. 24.
• CFL teams will scoop up some home-grown talent in the Canadian Draft on Monday, May 6. The Stampeders have seven selections in this year’s draft including the seventh overall pick and two spots in the second round.
An interesting wrinkle to this year’s draft is that the Ottawa franchise — slated to begin play in 2014 — will make selections in the first four rounds.
• Fanfest — brought to you by Nissan — takes place on Saturday, May 25. It’s the unofficial launch of the new season as fans get a chance to prowl the McMahon Stadium turf and intreact with Stampeders players, alumni, coaches, Outriders and Ralph the Dog.
You can pose for a photo with the Grey Cup, sign up for the Kids Club and browse through the latest in authentic Calgary gear from the Stamps Store. Fanfest is also the first opportunity for fans to pick up their season tickets for the coming year.
• If Fanfest is the unofficial start to the season, then the real start to football comes on May 30 when training camp opens at McMahon Stadium.
First, it’s the rookies on the field and then the veterans join the party on June 2.
• The Stamps and Lions will warm up for their June 28 contest by facing each other on Friday, June 14 in a pre-season contest at McMahon. It will be the first CFL action in Calgary since the West Division semifinal on Nov. 11, 2012, when the Stamps posted a heart-stopping last-minute win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders
