Calgary Stampeders linebacker Marc Calixte has announced his retirement from the Canadian Football League.
Calixte had been the longest-serving player on the Stampeders roster as he joined the team in 2003 and played 147 regular-season games in his 10 seasons for the Red and White. He also played in nine playoff contests and was a member of the Stamps’ Grey Cup-winning squad in 2008.
The 34-year-old Laval, Que., native was a special-teams standout throughout his career in Calgary and he had 91 career special-teams tackles including a personal best of 17 in 2009. He also reached double digits in special-teams tackles in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010.
Calixte also recorded 25 career defensive tackles and two fumble recoveries.
“Marc has been a very important part of the Stampeders for the past decade,” said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “He was an exceptional special-teams player, provided leadership as the special teams captain and was also an active member of the community. His professionalism and dedication to the game will be missed.
“I want to thank Marc for everything he has done for this team and this city and wish he and his family all the best in the future.”
Calixte joined the Stampeders in 2003 after being selected in the first round (seventh overall) out of the University of Tennessee-Martin. During his time in Calgary, Calixte played for four different head coaches and had 333 teammates.
“I’d like to thank the administration and the coaches of the Stampeders for having faith in me and in my abilities,” said Calixte. “These last 10 years in Calgary have been amazing and I’m very grateful to have been able to spend my entire football career with the Stampeders.
“I also want to acknowledge the fans. Through all kinds of weather, they always show up to support the team. I want to thank each and every one of you.”
