Stamps headed to Grey Cup

For the 13th time in franchise history, the Calgary Stampeders are going to the Grey Cup game.

The Stamps will be looking for their seventh championship when they face the hometown Toronto Argonauts on Sunday at Rogers Centre. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. MST.

It’s the third time the Stamps will face the Boatmen in the Canadian Football League’s ultimate game. Calgary won the 1971 title with a 14-11 victory over Toronto while the Argos turned the tables in the 1991 Grey Cup, claiming a 36-21 victory.

Five of the Stamps’ previous 12 trips to the Grey Cups have been to Toronto, including wins in 1948 and 1992.

Calgary and Toronto finished second in their respective divisions during the regular season as the Stamps were 12-6 in the West while the Argos were 9-9 in the East.

The Red and White knocked off Saskatchewan in the West semi before dethroning the defending Grey Cup-champion BC Lions with a 34-29 victory in Sunday’s West final in Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the Argos beat Edmonton in the East semi and upset Montreal 27-20 in the East final.

Toronto won both regular-season meetings with Calgary in 2012, claiming a 39-36 decision on July 7 at Rogers Centre and a 22-14 win at McMahon Stadium on Aug. 18.
