Head coach and general manager John Hufnagel made the following statement Tuesday regarding the starting quarterback for Sunday’s West Division semifinal:
The Calgary Stampeders are very fortunate and blessed to have two QBs who have proven they can win football games. Not only do they possess the skill to get the job done on the field, they also are great team players, which has been the trademark of the 2012 edition of the Stampeders. We finished the regular season with the second-best record in the CFL because of our great team play and both QBs have contributed to that success.
Over the last two games, Kevin and Drew played almost equal time and both had similar success on the field.
After much thought and discussion with my assistant coaches, Drew Tate will be our starting QB on Sunday vs. the Roughriders. He has shown during the past two games he is fully recovered from his shoulder injury, he is throwing accurately and seeing the field well. Drew is a very interesting QB whose athleticism allows him to extend plays when things break down. When Drew has started and played at least half of the game, his winning percentage is 83%.
Both QBs are very respectful towards each other and have voiced their opinion to me that they will support my decision and continue to do as much as they can to help the team succeed.
