Stewart rewarded for record performance

Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman Anwar Stewart has been named the Canadian Football League’s defensive player of the week for Week 18.

Playing just his third game of the season after signing with Calgary on Oct. 10, the 36-year-old veteran tied a Stampeders single-game record Friday night by recording four sacks in the Stamps’ 41-21 victory over the BC Lions at McMahon Stadium.

Stewart finished the contest with four tackles and a pass knockdown in addition to the four quarterback drops, which were part of a season-high eight sacks on the night for the Calgary defence.

This marks the second straight week and the third time overall this season a Stampeders player has been awarded the league’s weekly defensive award.

Keon Raymond was the winner last week while Charleston Hughes took home the award in Week 9.

Including the top offensive player, top Canadian and top special-teams player awards, Stamps have won a total of 13 weekly awards so far in 2012.
