McDaniel doubles up on TDs

Marquay McDaniel went nearly two full seasons without scoring a regular-season touchdown.

Then, once he reintroduced himself into the end-zone, he needed less than two hours to make a return trip.

“It was good to get on the board again,” the Stampeders slotback said after Sunday’s 30-25 loss at Saskatchewan. “It was nice, but what really counts are the team results and we’re disappointed by the loss.”

The setback snapped the Stamps’ four-game losing streak.

“It just seemed we weren’t as sharp as we had been in the last little while,” said McDaniel, who finished Sunday’s contest with five catches for 45 yards in the two majors. “The encouraging thing is that even though we weren’t executing as well as we would have lined, we were still in the game.

“That’s what we’ve been doing all season long — overcoming adversity and getting through the rough spots to achieve good results. This time, we fell just a little short.”

This has been a nice bounce-back season for McDaniel. After making 133 catches for 1,682 yards in his first two CFL seasons, the Virginia Beach, Va., product played just one game with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats a season ago before getting released.

He then signed with the Stamps and finished the 2011 season on Calgary’s practice roster.

McDaniel has made 42 catches for 584 yards this season and ranks second on the club to fellow slotback Nik Lewis in both categories.

He’ll look to add to those totals on Friday when the Stamps play host to the Edmonton Eskimos.

“It’s good that we have a short week after the loss,” he said. “We want to get back out there again and atone for what happened in this last game. We have to get back to the way we had been playing and try to get another winning streak going.”
