At the time when Nik Lewis’ milestone happened, I thought they might stop the game. But I saw the play clock going so I was saying to myself “I have to call this play,” and the crowd is screaming. They were very loud for Nik.
We got the play off but a couple of the players in the huddle were saying they couldn’t hear me. So it was kind of a little scramble of a play because of the crowd and then when we got to the line of scrimmage, I tried to quiet them down to say “Hey, we’re running a play” but I think they were too involved in the fact that Nik set the record and they didn’t want to pay me any attention.
I wanted it to happen but I didn’t know if it was going to happen early. But it actually almost did happen right away. Once he broke the first tackle, I said to myself “Oh, this can happen right now” and it could be a touchdown. What a great way to do it, to do it on a catch and a touchdown. But he was caught from behind and he had to wait a couple more plays.
I think it was good that it didn’t happen on the first play . . . it was better.
It was a big night. We talked about it — me and Nik — about this being a really special night, taking into account also that those guys were being added to the Wall of Fame for Calgary.
What better way to go out, with both of us breaking records and getting a win like this? We talked about it and it came true.
I think it was just the confidence from us coming out fast. We harped about it all week is not come out lax, not get lulled to sleep by Winnipeg and, once we got ahead, we wanted to keep them down.
They’re a team that possibly could come back.
Most definitely, I would say I’m much more comfortable Calgary Stampeder now. Any time when you’re doing something and you continue to do it, you get a lot of reps at it, you get that much more familiar with it.
Dave Dickenson has been building a relationship between me and the offensive line, our receivers . . . once you do it for so long and build that relationship with the guys, it’s coming through now.
It was great to see Bo Levi Mitchell get some action tonight. He’s a great guy. We call him gunslinger because he loves to throw the ball. This is the perfect league for him to throw the ball.
It’s funny, we get in the locker room and talk about stuff, I actually could have been Bo’s older babysitter, older brother. I’m not saying I could have been his father but it’s a big age difference. We always kid about it but that guy is going to have a long career in the CFL.
