Both Alberta clubs are 5-4 midway through the 2012 Canadian Football League season, with the Stamps holding second place in the West Division by virtue of the head-to-head tie-breaker advantage.
Calgary has fared well in the rematch contest in recent seasons as the Stamps have won the back end of the series five years in a row including the last four under the guidance of head coach and general manager John Hufnagel.
“We’ve been very fortunate and made some plays at the end of the game to get it done,” said Hufnagel when asked to explain his club’s success in this contest. “It’s usually a game that is very tight and we’ve been able to make one or two more plays. That’s the only way I can explain it.”
In addition to the significance of tonight’s contest in regards to the playoff race, Stamps slotback Nik Lewis has a chance to make history. With 9,908 career receiving yards, Lewis is 92 yards away from becoming the 16th player in CFL history to crack the 10,000 mark. He needs 23 yards to pass ex-Stamp Travis Moore for 16th place on the league’s all-time list.
“His uniqueness, his competitiveness,” said Hufnagel when asked about the secret of Lewis’ success. “And when I say uniqueness, Nik probably does have one of the best set of hands that I’ve been associated with as far as receivers are concerned. And he’s so good after the catch.”
