For some Stampeders fans, the best part of the 31-30 Calgary victory in the Labour Day Classic was the offensive performance of Nik Lewis, Jon Cornish, Marquay McDaniel and Kevin Glenn.
For others, it was the staunch defensive play, especially in the third quarter when the Stamps allowed just two single points despite the fact the Edmonton Eskimos had the wind advantage.
Others still were raving about the exciting end to the game — Larry Taylor’s late go-ahead touchdown and then Taylor’s exciting dash out of the end-zone on a missed field goal to avoid a potential game-tying point on the final play of regulation.
You want to know what the players were talking about after the game? You, the fans.
After the final gun, Lewis made a point of finding a camera and telling the fans they had down a great job pumping up the players in the crucial stages of the game.
Other players took to Twitter to express their appreciation.
Here are just a few examples:
Eric Fraser: big shout to the stamps fans gettin loud in the 4th. Loudest Ive heard McMahon in my 3 years
Juwan Simpson: Appreciate the support today!!! The fans were awesome! By far the best our fans have been!! Go stamps go!!!
Keon Raymond: Thanks to everyone who came out and supported today your energy gave us energy
The bottom line is, fans do make a difference.
“I like what they were doing at the end of the game,” said head coach and general manager John Hufnagel about the crowd’s enthusiasm. “I thought it aided us, not only with our emotional spirit but is possibly also hindered (the Eskimos’) communication. Anything that you can do to help in that manner is good stuff. That’s why they call it home-field advantage.”
Stamps fans’ next chance to show their awesomeness comes on Sept. 14 when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers come calling at McMahon Stadium.
