Coming in, I expected to be a special-teams player, which I am. And I’m really enjoying that role.
I feel like I’m continuously improving, so that’s been great. If I can get into the game on offence and touch the ball a few times, that’s just great. I couldn’t be happier about the situation. When Cornish needs a blow, I’ll go in there.
Jon’s a great mentor on and off the field. He’s just helped me significantly. He takes time out of his day to make sure I know what I’m doing.
Just watching him in practice, I can pick up on little things that a six-year vet has gained over the years. It’s really just great having a guy like that in front of you when there’s so much to learn.
The biggest thing I’ve learned so far is being versatile. I’m being put in certain situations that perhaps I’ve never done before or that I’ve done infrequently and trying to excel at those. That’s been the biggest thing, whether it’s on special teams or playing unique positions on the offence. I’ve got to almost be a jack-of-all-trades.
It’s really an ideal situation for me being able to play in Calgary. Not only being on my hometown team but I also feel I’m a pretty good fit for this team. It’s really an incredibly positive experience so far and I’m just loving it.
It’s been cool to be still be so close to the Dinos as they get ready to start the season. I still live with some Dinos players, so it’s cool to see how our programs parallel.
It’s going to be nice getting out to that game tomorrow, but the real focus is on Monday for the Labour Day game. I haven’t played in one yet so I’m excited to see what happens.
