The Canadian Football League has honoured two members of the Calgary Stampeders with player of the week awards for Week 9.
Running back Jon Cornish is the Canadian player of the week after rushing for 159 yards in the Stamps’ 17-10 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. The performance allowed Cornish to take over the CFL lead in rushing with a total of 571 yards on the season.
Meanwhile, Stamps defensive end Charleston Hughes is the CFL’s defensive player of the week after accumulating two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception against Saskatchewan. Hughes is tops on the Stampeders and is among the league leaders with four sacks in 2012.
This week’s honours are the sixth and seventh weekly awards captured by a Calgary player this season. Cornish has been named the top Canadian player in Weeks 1, 7 and 9 as well as the top offensive player in Week 7. Larry Taylor received the special teams award in Weeks 2 and 7 while Hughes is the first Stamps player this season to get the defensive player nod.
Going back to Week 14 of the 2011 season, Cornish has been voted the Canadian player of the week six times in 15 games.
