Cornish, Taylor pick up awards

The Calgary Stampeders have earned three of four player of the week honours for Week 7.

Stampeders running back Jon Cornish is the CFL’s offensive player of the week and Canadian player of the week following his performance in a 31-20 win against the host Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday. Cornish’s total of 170 rushing yards is the 10th best rushing game in franchise history and the best by a Stampeder since 2005.

Cornish also had one rushing touchdown to bring his season total to four and had six receptions for 47 yards.

Meanwhile, Stamps receiver/returner Larry Taylor is the special teams player of the week. Taylor had 172 return yards – 84 on kick returns and 88 on punt returns – to continue his fantastic start to the 2012 season.

Taylor leads the CFL this season with 1,228 combined return yards and is second in the league for total yards with 1,317. He leads the league in punt-return yards with 415 and is in second place in kickoff-return yards (677) and third in missed field goal-return yards (136).

Cornish and Taylor are both repeat winners of CFL weekly awards this season — Cornish was named top Canadian in Week 1 while Taylor was voted top special teams player in Week 2.

Cornish has won top-Canadian honours five times since Week 14 of the 2011 season while Taylor has been honoured three times since joining the Stamps last season.
