In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup, Canada Post has issued a new series of stamps.
The stamps — which were unveiled on Monday and will go on sale starting Thursday, Aug. 16 — commemorate great moments and players in each Canadian Football League team’s history.
The Calgary Stampeders stamp features Hall of Fame linebacker Wayne (Thumper) Harris, a member of the Stamps’ 1971 championship club, and the 1948 season that saw Calgary record the only unbeaten season in CFL history as well as launch the spirit that eventually evolved into the Grey Cup festival.
In addition to Canada Post outlets, the stamps will be available at the Stamps Store.
Harris played for the Stamps from 1961-72 and he was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1976. He was named West all-star 11 straight seasons and was named a league all-star eight times.
He was the MVP of the Stamps’ 1971 Grey Cup win over the Toronto Argonauts.
Besides Harris, the Calgary stamp also figures a background action image from the 1948 Grey Cup game, a 12-7 Stamps victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders.
In addition to capping what is still the only undefeated season in CFL history, the 1948 Grey Cup is noteworthy for the numerous Calgary fans who travelled to Toronto and celebrated the event like never before.
From cooking up pancakes on the City Hall steps to riding a horse in the Royal York Hotel lobby, the celebrations helped launch the Grey Cup festival and week-long festivities as we know them today.
